Is it worth purchasing new carpet?
If there is sewage involved you can almost bet you will need to get new. A qualified technician who follows the IICRC standard will most probably throw the carpet away.
Are the walls Water Damaged as well?
This is the one thing that can catch people out is that they don't realize that it is not only the carpet that is wet by the subfloor and walls are also wet. Structural drying should be done professionally or mold can start to cultivate within 24 hours. One way a professional water damage restorer would do this is by venting air inside the walls using specialized ducting.
Are the timber floors also wet?
Wood floors can be difficult to dry with normal air movement with blowers. A professional may need to use an injectidry unit to help take the water out of the timber. An injectidry uses vacuum plates installed on the floor throughout the property. It will gradually suck the moisture out of the floor over a period of time. It must be noted the injectidry system may not work|do the job in all cases, a qualified professional can provide advice on this.
How are flood damaged carpet dried?
A common way of doing this is by placing blower between the carpet and the underlay so that there is air blowing between. The carpet is effectively what we call tented. Again this may not be a suitable restoration method for all cases. Also, sometimes the carpet underlay may need to be completely removed and dried elsewhere, or replaced.
Is it rubber underlay underneath the carpet?
In most situations it will be either foam or rubber underlay underneath the carpet. It is important to note that foam underlay can take some time to dry. Each type of underlay have difference characteristics. Also, consider the replacement cost for the underlay.
Only some issues have been considered here. The main issue to understand is that mold can grow within a day if the conditions are right. Which is why it is important to dry down building, carpets, floors etc to acceptable moisture limits. Failing to do this can lead to a mould problem which can cost a lot more to repair.
