Marijuana has been around as long as the planet has. It's presence and usefulness to ancient cultures is not only well recorded, it is often surprising. Hemp has played a major role in the day to day life and survival of many cultures across many continents. The plants a culture cultivates help tell the tale of many aspects of the culture itself.
The ancient people of the Yang-Shao were some of the first to be on record as depending on the cannabis plant for basic survival. They were a hunting and fishing culture that lived along the Yellow River Valley in China around 6,500 years ago. They used the cannabis plant to make hemp nets and other tools in order to gather food. Hemp later became important in the world of clothing with the development of hemp cloth. Hemp cloth replaced animal skins as the clothing of choice. It was even the clothing of choice for the wealthy until the introduction of silk.
As time progressed more uses of the cannabis plant were developed in ancient China. The daily diet of ancient cultures included more hemp than you would think. Hemp seeds were ground up, cooked in soups, or roasted to perfection. Hemp seeds were even said to have saved a famine struck Asian culture going through a terrible war.
The medicinal uses of the plant were apparent to ancient cultures as well. Some of the earliest "doctors" on record mention the effects of cannabis flowers. During surgery or after a broken bone doctors would apply a ground up marijuana paste to help ease pain. The earliest pot prescriptions date back to early 2000 BC. It was prescribe for everything from absent mindedness to constipation. Marijuana has always been appreciated for it's medicinal use and lack of serious side effects, even with prolonged use.
Hemp oil and paper were later developments that still are a part of life today. Hemp paper was first made from old hemp products such as nets and hemp cloth. Hemp paper is known for it's superior durability and resistance to tearing. Hemp paper is still being used today in high end bibles and is the paper used on Canada's currency. Hemp oil was used for an assortment of uses. Hemp oil was used in making important every day products such as lamp fuel, soap, varnish, paint, and lubrication. There was also a good deal of cooking done with hemp seed oil. Leftover oil formed protein cakes that made tasty treats for household pets.
